New York, Los Angeles, London, foodie hot spots around the globe are seeing the latest trend of tapas style menus with worldly cuisines featured in their most fashionable restaurants. Roberto and Nardya of the swank boutique hotel, Campbell House, bring vogue to Penang with their latest dining creation. Designed with the back street taverns of Venice in mind, Il Bacaro serves up Italian tapas, cicchetti, in a warm and friendly atmosphere.
According to owner, Roberto, a successful restaurant comprises equal part 'money making' and equal share 'love for the food'. He is passionate about educating local taste buds to enjoy traditional and contemporary Italian cuisine so that authentic dishes remain as such, no compromises - what is served at Il Bacaro is 100% Italian. In line with this effort, look out for upcoming fun cinema evenings where a classic film will be aired with a quiz and prizes afterwards. Roberto says that culture is meshed with food, you cannot have one without the other. Adorned with old family photos you get the feel that Il Bacaro will soon become an institution for expats and Penangites alike seeking wholesome food and classy but amiable ambience.
Pictured above you see an excerpt from the cicchetti menu. Versatile enough to be a snack or larger meal, the small portions allow you to try an array or repeat order to create something more substantial. Without mentioning every single plate, (as we experienced only hits, no misses in this sampling) just the thought of salmon tartare, garlic prawns and cannelloni continues to make me dribble. The usual accompaniment or ombra (shadow) to these tasty morsels is a glass of wine. One of Roberto's preferred drops is the Nero d'avola a smooth easy drinking Italian red where he says you, "Can taste the sun." To end it all, home made Limoncello is the way to go. My only complaint... it's not available for retail.
In Roberto's words, "Il Bacaro is all about enjoying yourself while you eat."
